Jen Ayyad Art
My Process
I am a self taught artist who draws inspiration from my faith, landscapes, interior design, music, and life experiences. The Ying and Yang of my medium is typically acrylic on acrylic and acrylic on canvas.
The process of painting on acrylic, also referred to as plexiglass is known as “verre églomisé,” which dates back to the 1700’s. The paint is applied to the backside of the acrylic (or glass in some cases), and the interpretation of the image is viewed from the front. The various uses of paint dictate the amount of light that I want to come through in the painting which impacts the depth and function of the art. This is a completely reverse layering process from painting on canvas.
I like to explore the use of mixed media when painting on canvas, often incorporating handmade papers, metallics & iridescent paints in my work. Both mediums reflect a sense of whimsical chaos where I let myself be free to create and explore.
Fun Fact: It took three years to create an art stand that would allow the plexiglass artwork to stay suspended in a way that I could view the paint on both sides of the acrylic panels.
